Finidi George has given reasons why he has stepped down as head coach of the Super Eagles.
In his resignation letter dated Friday, June 14, 2024, and addressed to the NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, Finidi said he could no longer continue on the post because of “changes to the team’s technical crew”.
“Dear sir, I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as the head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s men’s senior team,” his resignation letter read in part.
“This decision is in light of the recent decision to effect changes to the team’s technical crew.”
It was also understood that on Thursday, when Finidi along with top NFF officials met with Sports Minister John Enoh, a decision to appoint a foreign boss for him was not discussed.
On Friday, the NFF announced they will appoint a foreign coach to head the Super Eagles before the start of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September as part of measures to revive the fortunes of the national team.
Finidi was presented as the new Super Eagles coach on May 13, 2024, after a long-drawn selection process.
He led the Super Eagles to force a 1-1 draw with South Africa in Uyo, before a 2-1 loss to Benin in Abidjan in continuation of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The results meant that Nigeria are now second from bottom in Group C with three points from four matches, four points adrift of front runners Rwanda, South Africa and Benin.

I believe he’s not competent, and that’s why he quit.
