Finidi George is making headlines again as he steps into a new coaching role shortly after leaving his position with the Super Eagles.
The 53-year-old’s time with Nigeria’s national team was brief, ending after just 40 days due to a disappointing performance in the World Cup qualifiers.
Despite this setback, Finidi’s coaching journey looks set to continue, with Nigeria Professional Football League club Rivers United considering him for the role of head coach.
This move could see Finidi bringing his vast experience and passion for the game to a new team, aiming to make a significant impact in the Nigerian league.
Finidi George Eyeing NPFL Return Weeks After Super Eagles Departure
Finidi George might soon be back on the sidelines just weeks after stepping down as the head coach of the Super Eagles. Reports suggest that he is on the radar of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, Rivers United, for the head coach position.
This follows his short stint with the Nigerian national team, where he was appointed in May but faced criticism after poor results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Under his leadership, the Super Eagles managed only a 1-1 draw against South Africa at home and then lost 2-1 to Benin, which cast doubt on his ability to lead the team effectively.
Although the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) initially denied receiving his resignation, they later acknowledged it and began looking for his replacement. The search for a new head coach for the Super Eagles is ongoing, with several names being rumored for the job.
Finidi Set for NPFL Return
Meanwhile, Finidi could be ready to come back to the NPFL, as Rivers United is thinking about bringing him on as their next manager for the 2024/25 season. According to the Daily Post, Rivers United wants to make changes to their coaching staff after struggling in the league and not securing a top spot, which cost them a continental ticket for the first time in three years.
Finidi, who successfully led Enyimba to the 2023 NPFL title, left his head coach role with the People’s Elephants in May to concentrate on his job with the Super Eagles. Though his time with the national team wasn’t successful, Rivers United sees his potential for turning their fortunes around.
Fans of sports betting might keep a close eye on this development as a change in coaching could significantly impact team performance and odds.
Finidi Confirms his Enyimba Resignation
Finidi George recently confirmed his resignation from Enyimba FC, stating he would not handle dual responsibilities with the national team.
Previously, Finidi had led Enyimba to win the Nigeria Professional Football League title, highlighting his skills and commitment. As he focused entirely on his duties with the Super Eagles, Enyimba was left in third place in the Nigerian league, showing the club’s strong performance even without his direct oversight.
This move underlines Finidi’s dedication to his coaching career and his determination to succeed at higher levels of football management.
The Takeaway
Finidi George’s departure from the Super Eagles after a short stint marked a challenging chapter in his coaching career. Despite the setback, his unwavering determination and proven track record, including leading Enyimba to an NPFL title, showcase his potential.
Now, as Rivers United considers him for their head coach position, Finidi has a new opportunity to demonstrate his expertise and passion for football. His potential return to the NPFL could bring renewed hope and success to Rivers United, underscoring his dedication to achieving excellence in football management.
Finidi’s journey serves as a testament to resilience and the pursuit of new beginnings in the face of challenges.
