SCORENigeria can exclusively report today that the NPFL clubs have rejected a proposal for the champions of the league to be paid a record-breaking prize money of a billion Naira.
The clubs said the sharing formula of the prize money, which also includes the runners-up taking home 500 million Naira, is not equitable and as such they would want a fairer sharing arrangement that would carry all 20 teams.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) have announced that they will pay these prize monies from their annual budget beginning from the new NPFL season.
A source told SCORENigeria: “What the NSC have proposed is most laudable, it will go a long way in making the league a lot more attractive and beneficial for the clubs who have been losing money season after season.
“But the club owners pointed out the dangers of giving almost all the prize money to the team who emerge as champions.
“If a club stand to win a billion Naira a season, it means that they could afford to set aside 200 million Naira to ensure that by hook and crook they are crowned champions.”
The NPFL clubs have now proposed a fairer distribution of the prize money that will be a lot more beneficial to all 20 of them.
