SCORENigeria can exclusively report that the NFF executive committee is divided over keeping Eric Chelle as Super Eagles coach.
The NFF set Eric Chelle a target to lead the team to the final of the 2025 AFCON, but he fell short as the team lost on penalties to hosts Morocco in the semifinals.
He also failed to qualify the team to the 2026 World Cup after he took over the team with six rounds of matches left in the campaign.
A top official informed SCORENigeria: “Some of the (NFF) board members support that he should continue as Super Eagles coach, while there are some who insist that he did not meet the two major targets they set for him and as such he should take a walk.
“The hawks on the board had hoped that qualification to the World Cup or at least getting to a second straight AFCON final would take the pressure off them as elections into the board is just eight months away.
“So, some of them are not happy that he has not helped them to keep their jobs.
“There are also others who are not happy that they could not force players on him.”
A decision will be taken by the NFF leadership, but the National Sports Commission (NSC) will also be expected to be part of this.
It is also known that the coach enjoys the support of some top Government officials.
The popularity of Eric Chelle shot up after against most expectations, the Super Eagles played entertaining, attacking football to reach the semifinal of the 2025 AFCON with captain Wilfred Ndidi even sticking out his neck for the 48-year-old coach to keep his post.
The former Mali coach signed a two-year contract with the NFF in January 2025 that pays him $50,000 a month.
