SCORENigeria can exclusively reveal that the Italian football federation have made a bold move to begin the process to secure Italian citizenship for Empoli youngster Emmanuel Ekong.
Ekong, 19, holds Swedish passport even though he was born in Italy and he is still eligible to play for Nigeria.
His father and former Super Eagles midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong specially told SCORENigeria the Italian authorities approached his son’s Serie A club that they wish to help him get citizenship ahead of capping him at age-grade level.
“Emmanuel has already represented Sweden at U18 level, he has a Swedish passport, like his three other brothers. But the Italian federation through Empoli demanded for my approval for them to secure Italian citizenship for him,” Ekong informed SCORENigeria
He further said he has told all his four footballing sons to be open about their choice for international football.
“They all love Nigeria, like their mom and dad,” he said.
“I only told them to appreciate the situation they have found themselves and pick the country that wants them the most.
“It’s really their personal decision and I can only guide and support them.”
