Jerome Akor has exclusively told SCORENigeria he is unfazed by the fierce competition among strikers for squad places in the Super Eagles and believes he will score enough goals in the French Ligue 1 to gatecrash the AFCON in January.
With Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, Terem Moffi, Kelechi Iheanacho all banging goals across Europe on a regular basis, Akor faces a daunting task to make the final cut to the AFCON early next year.
The 23-year-old striker has been capped by the Flying Eagles Class of 2019 and he is currently the highest scoring Nigeria star in Ligue 1 with five goals.
“The target is simple – score more goals with my club before the end of the year that it will be impossible for the Super Eagles to continue to overlook me going into the AFCON,” Akor told SCORENigeria
“I know I am playing catch up to get on the Super Eagles squad, but I will still back myself to do just that.”
Akor is armed with an awesome aerial prowess besides the power and speed he offers as a direct-playing centre-forward.
The former Lillestrom, who was the leading scorer in the Norwegian top league with 15 goals in as many matches before his summer transfer to Montpellier, said he is also confident his goals will transform his new French club to Ligue 1 front runners after many years as a mid-table team.
“We have to start working towards not been content with a mid-table finish and aim to be among the front runners in Ligue 1,” declared the striker, who is now among the Top 20 most valuable Nigeria stars after his transfer market value shot to eight Million Euros.
“Hopefully, my goals will help in this cause.”
