Tunisian giants Esperance are reported to be locked in talks with NPFL champions Akwa United for striker Charles Atshimene after they have signed Anayo Iwuala from Enyimba.
Atshimene emerged joint top scorer of the NPFL along with Silas Nwankwo of Nasarawa United this past season with 19 goals.
He was also the first player to score 19 goals in 27 matches for Akwa United in a single season, surpassing the 17-goal record achieved Akarandut Orok and which has stood for 11 years.
Atshimene scored his 19th goal from the penalty spot in the 34th minute to cancel out Chinonso Okonkwo’s 32nd minute goal, before Austin Ogunye sealed the win for Lobi Stars from the penalty spot as the champions suffered their fifth defeat of the season on final day of action at the Aper Aku Stadium.
The striker missed 11 matches due to his involvement in the home-based Super Eagles trip to USA for a friendly against Mexico and a minor injury at the beginning of the season.
The 2020/2021 NPFL season was Atshimene’s second campaign in Nigeria’s top flight after he featured for Warri Wolves the previous season when he scored seven goals.
