Record nine-time NPFL champions ‘People’s elephant’ Enyimba could not have hoped for a worse start to the new season after they fell 3-2 at home to promoted Sporting Lagos.
This was after Enyimba had taken the lead in this contest through veteran forward Stanley Dimgba.
This latest setback comes against the background of calls for chairman, Nwankwo Kanu, to throw in the towel.
Barau 2-0 home win over Abia Warriors was also one of the highlights of midweek action in the top-flight league.
They now have 11 points from five matches, while Enugu Rangers and Doma United remain within striking distance of the new league leaders.
They both have recorded 10 points each with Rangers ahead by the virtue of a better goals’ difference.
Bendel Insurance climbed to fourth after a hard-fought 2-1 victory at home against Ikorodu City.
Doma United, Niger Tornadoes and Inter Lagos were all held at home.
Doma United played out a 2-2 draw with Plateau United, Tornadoes were pegged back by Warri Wolves and Inter Lagos drew 1-1 with visiting Kano Pillars.
