Former England and Manchester United star Paul Scholes has stirred a big controversy after he played down the individual display of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho against the Premier League giants as just lucky.
Uzoho pulled off at least 12 saves and was running away from Old Trafford with a clean sheet before a Scott McTominay strike in additional time denied Omonia Nicosia a famous point in a UEFA Europa League tie Thursday night.
Uzoho’s performance was described by his coach Neil Lennon as “world-class”.
However, Scholes said it was nothing special by the Super Eagles shot stopper.
“I don’t think he made any saves that were incredible, they were shots he should have taken anyway. It was a shot from Casemiro that he possibly got on, otherwise the saves were mostly to stop weak finishes,” the ex-international argued.
“Look at the saves, the ball hit the middle of the goal, he will take them. It was a good save on Rashford’s finish, but not fantastic. It was a weak ending and he basically throws himself away.
“To be honest, he was lucky, although he saved almost everything. Had he saved the shot from McTominay, it would have been a miracle.
“Yes, he was good, don’t get me wrong, he did very well. But he saved the shots he was supposed to save. He did no more than that.
“He’s a goalkeeper after all, it’s his job to stop the ball.”
