Tyronne Ebuehi has revealed that he thought his career was over when he suffered a knee injury that kept him out at Portuguese giants Benfica for more than a year.
“I have been away for a long time and it has been very difficult for me,” he told BBC.
“I wondered if ‘this would be the end’? Questions like that can arise from time to time. We often hear that, with this type of injury, players they never return to the same level they had before the injury “,
The full-back revealed that the injury transformed him.
“The injury changed me a lot, not only as a player, but also as a person,” he said.
“It was very difficult. Being injured and away from the only country I knew [Holland], away from family and friends. I felt alone knowing that they were not they could come to me easily if they wanted to.
“The injury made me aware of many things, like the importance of taking care of my body. How things can happen in football and how to deal with them.
“I am grateful for the lessons that God has given me. Now I know how to move forward in my career, how to deal with injuries in the future. But I hope that doesn’t happen.”
After failing the 2018/19 season entirely, Ebuehi returned to the pitch from Benfica’s B team last season, but never got to wear the main team’s jersey.
Last month, he was loaned by Benfica to Twente.
“I am happy to be in shape again. Twente gave me the opportunity to show that the last two years were just bad luck and I want to take advantage of it,” he concluded.
The Dutch club have the option to buy Ebuehi after the loan.
