The Nigerian mother of Cyriel Dessers has revealed her dream was for her son to become a lawyer.
Sophie Bakry, 49, is the reason why the KRC Genk striker has opted to play for the Super Eagles and not Belgium, where he was born and his father hails from.
In an interview with Het Laaste Nieuws, his Lagos-born mother, who once worked as a flight attendant in Belgium, said the family had wanted to be a lawyer and not the professional footballer he has turned out to be.
Mama Sophie and Dessers’ young brother, Emile, are the striker’s biggest fans.
Emile has predicted his brother will get goals for hometown club Genk on his return to Belgium.
“If you just let Cyriel play for a whole season, he will score enough goals anyway. I’m sure of that,” said the 19-year-old who is studying business administration at university.
“I’ve watched many of his matches. I also don’t know if what I’m saying is exactly right, but I just have that feeling. Leave Cyriel and it will be fine.”
That should be good news for fans of both Super Eagles and Genk.
