Plymouth striker Owen Oseni, whose invitation to both the Unity Cup and friendlies against Poland and Portugal has raised eyebrows, has attempted to explain his call-up.
Oseni, who plays in the English third-tier league, said he believes he made the Super Eagles cut based on his recent form.
“The coaches were watching me, obviously they picked up on the form I’d hit just towards the end of the season,” he tried to justify his call-up ahead of more established strikers like Sadiq Umar and Kelechi Iheanacho.
He added that his selection got him excited.
“I know I had an alright season, but to get called up for a country where there’s more than 240 million people and probably 50% want to play for their country was quite a big deal for me so I was really buzzing,” he said.
Oseni, 23, scored seven goals and made three assists in 27 appearances as Plymouth finished outside the League One promotion playoffs in eighth place.
