The coach of Turkish club Adana Demirspor, Vincenzo Montella, has come to the defence of Henry Onyekuru after he was booed by fans of his own club for meeting up with players of Kasimpasa after a Super Lig clash.
Adana Demirspor thrashed Kasimpasa 5-0 at home, but the fans booed Onyekuru when he exchanged banter with the players of the other team on the pitch.
Montella said Onyekuru did nothing wrong and ought not to be attacked by the fans.
“I was really upset when I heard that Onyekuru was booed,” he said.
“For us, he is both a committed football player and a popular name in the team by everyone who makes friends with everyone. That’s why it really saddened me to hear these, and even if we think you made a mistake, we need to think about it as well.
“He didn’t do it intentionally. He went to greet his old friends in front of everyone. Even if we were looking for some other motives, maybe he could have hugged everyone secretly in the dressing room, but he did it in front of everyone, so we should not look for ulterior motives in this regard.
“I hope this issue is closed here.”
Adana Demispor are fourth and five points outside the European football qualification bracket with seven rounds of matches to the end of the season.
