The experienced 32-year-old central defender announced his retirement from international football via social media.
“Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle,” Ekong posted on his X account accompanied by a video that covered his international career.
“Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life.
“The journey may end here, but my support never will.”
He will therefore not feature at this year’s AFCON, which kicks off on December 21, as first reported by SCORENigeria
He won 83 caps since his debut in June 2015 and featured at five major tournaments including the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The highlight of his international career was being named the MVP of the delayed 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, where the Super Eagles went all the way to the championship game.
