Under-fire coach Gernot Rohr has said today’s 1-1 draw at home with Cape Verde was like a victory as it qualified the Super Eagles to the final playoffs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Eagles were forced to a 1-1 draw in Lagos by Cape Verde to finish winners of Group C with 13 points, two points ahead of nearest rivals Cape Verde.
“Sometimes a draw is like a victory. It was the case today. We knew a draw will qualify us,” Rohr said after the match.
“It was not an easy game because Cape Verde have a very good technical team.
“They scored when we believed we had the match under control.
“We missed a lot of chances in the first half, we deserved to score a second goal, but when it did not come, we had to defend the draw and the players did it very well.”
The winners of the 10 qualifying groups will now be drawn in a final playoff in March will the five winners over two legs progressing to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November 2022.
