Calvin Bassey has come to stay in the heart of the defence of Ajax Amsterdam after he posted a solid debut in a 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam today.
But Ajax coach Alfred Schrueder was also quick to warn the Super Eagles defender must be more careful about his tackles especially in the box.
“You can see that he is extremely strong and he really wants to enter the duels physically,” he said after the match.
“That is also good, but you have to do that at times when it cannot become dangerous for us. You have to be careful with that, especially in the sixteen. And you also have to watch out for tackles in the Netherlands.”
Bassey, who missed Ajax first two league games after a red card in the Dutch Super Cup versus PSV, played on the left side of central defence.
He displayed power, speed and aerial dominance in the 90 minutes he was in action.
He posted 97% pass accuracy, won two tackles, made seven recoveries and had 110 touches of the ball.
His debut ended with a clean sheet by the Dutch champions for the first time this season.
Ajax fans were unanimous he will be a very important player for their darling club.
