As expected, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have restated their support for embattled FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
CAF announced that the executive committee “unanimously reaffirms its support for Infantino” and thanks him “for his support for African football over the years.”
In a statement, CAF declared that they welcome the apology signed by Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström that was released at the beginning of the week.
“We are committed to continuing to work with FIFA, its member associations and other stakeholders to uphold and adhere to established principles of good governance, proper decision-making processes and transparency,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
The announcement came after The Times reported in recent days that Infantino, in pursuit of federation support, has offered Morocco the 2030 World Cup final in exchange for a vote for him in the next re-election.
FIFA have denied that this information is accurate.
CAF have consistently supported Infantino, and several of the major African confederations have publicly expressed their support for the FIFA President.
Morocco, which will host some matches in the next World Cup, is one of them.
CAF are Africa’s equivalent to UEFA and, with their 54 member countries, are the second largest continental association in FIFA. UEFA have 55 members. FIFA are made up of 211 member associations in total.
UEFA have announced that they have no confidence in Infantino and several European member associations have withdrawn their letters of support to the FIFA President.
In addition, critical winds are blowing against Infantino from North and Central America.
