The winners of the forthcoming AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire will now be paid $7 million, which is a 40% increase on what the previous winners of the tournament received.
Runners-up will receive $4 million, the two semifinalists get $2.5 million, while four quarterfinalists take home $1.3 million each.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe said the increase in the prize monies was on account of “significant progress” by the continental football ruling body in the last two years.
He said he believes a portion of these prize monies will be used to develop football in the various countries.
