The Falconets fire power has been boosted ahead of next month’s U20 World Cup in Poland following the news that Portuguese champions Benfica have now given in to releasing striker Janet ‘Semenya’ Akekoromowei for the tournament.
SCORENigeria earlier reported that Benfica will block Semenya from the World Cup as she is not fully fit on account of an ankle injury that sidelined her for several months.
“The player has now got the blessing of her club to be at the World Cup,” a source informed SCORENigeria
“She will fly directly to Poland from her base in Portugal for the tournament.”
Falconets coach Moses Aduku has pressed for the release of the big centre-forward to the team for a campaign that will begin with a tough first round tie against Spain on September 7.
China and New Caledonia are the other teams in their group..
Benfica beat mighty Barcelona to the signature of the highly-rated Semenya, who has already been capped by the Super Falcons.
She signed a two-year contract.
