The Genk striker who scored a record 30 goals in 2002 has selected Paul Onuachu, who is set to break his record, on his Belgian League Golden Team of the season.
Wesley Sonck, now a TV pundit, scored 30 goals in a single season 19 years ago, a record that has now been matched by Onuachu.
Interestingly, the former Genk star has now picked the Nigeria star in his Golden Team of the regular season in Belgium.
The fans will also have a chance to choose their Golden XI of the season.
In the run-up to Sunday’s match between Club Brugge and Anderlecht, the ex-striker already announced his Golden Eleven.
He opted for a variant of the 3-4-3 formation, which is ignored by a number of big names.
The most notable absentee is, for example, Noa Lang, nevertheless the big favorite to win the trophy of ‘Professional Footballer of the Year’.
The reason for his absence, however, is obvious: Sonck chose three other Club Brugge players. But other stars such as Theo Bongonda (KRC Genk), Raphael Holzhauser (Beerschot) and Thomas Henry (OHL) are also not among them.
As trainer of season, Sonck chose his former teammate at the Red Devils: Vincent Kompany.
Sonck’s Golden Eleven:
Simon Mignolet (Club); Clinton Mata (Club), Ritchie De Laet (Antwerp), Arthur Theate (Ostend); Amir Murillo (Anderlecht), Lior Refaelov(Antwerp), Mats Rits (Club), Adriano Correia (Eupen), Yunja Ito (Genk), Paul Onuachu (Genk), Xavier Mercier (OHL)
