It’s another case of different strokes for different folks after FIFA controversially lifted a one-match ban of USA striker Folarin Balogun, which will allow him to play today’s 2026 Round of 32 tie against Belgium.
US President Donald Trump through the White House said FIFA did the right thing to reverse Balogun’s suspension.
“Thanks to FIFA, they are doing the right thing and reversing a great injustice,” the White House shared via X, accompanied by the text ‘USA – USA – USA’.
Top journalist Ben Jacobs reported that the White House contacted FIFA directly with a request to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review Folarin Balogun’s red card.
USA coach Mauricio Pochettino said it was a fair decision.
“I repeat: it is a fair decision made by FIFA. It was a foul that did not deserve a red card. We were punished during the match against Bosnia and then again against Belgium? That would surely be unfair,” he maintained.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia described the decision as an April Fool joke, while No 1 goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said he was shocked.
“I didn’t know that July 5th was April 1st at FIFA,” Garcia joked.
“The federation is defending not only itself, but also football in general, integrity, and ethics.
“In my opinion, this is the first time in history that such a decision has been made.”
“Of course I was shocked, especially because it is decided one day before the match,” admitted the Real Madrid shot stopper Courtois.
The Royal Belgian Football Association, KBVB, said they are exploring various options as it concerns this ruling.
“To protect the legitimate rights of all participating countries and to safeguard the fundamental principles of fair play, both at this World Cup and during future editions of the tournament, the KBVB is currently investigating all possible legal and regulatory steps ,” the football association said in an official statement.
