The Super Eagles striker was at the right place at the right time when the ball crashed against his knee during a goalmouth melee and rolled into the net in the 45th minute for only goal against West Ham.
It was also a belated birthday gift for the Ilorin-born striker, who celebrated his 25th birthday Friday.
If Awoniyi and the rest of the Forest team were disappointing in their loss at Newcastle United on the opening day of the new season, they put up a spirited display against West Ham to deserve all three points today.
Besides his lucky goal, Awoniyiโs general play caught the eye to justify the massive investment Forest made when they snapped him up from Union Berlin.
His goals and general contributions will be crucial for his team to stay up on their return to the top league in England.
He will now have the support of fellow Nigeria star Emmanuel Dennis for Forest to stay put in the Premier League at the end of this season.
