Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has explained why he dropped Ademola Lookman to the bench in the home win over Club Brugge in a UEFA Champions League Playoffs second leg tie.
Despite enjoying a splendid run since his January transfer to Atletico, the Super Eagles forward was consigned to the bench in Tuesday night’s reverse fixture against Belgian team Club Brugge.
He came on in the 70th minute and assisted for his team’s third goal as they marched on to the Round of 16 of the Champions League courtesy of a 4-1 home win after both teams played out a 3-3 draw in the first leg.
Diego Simeone said he picked Alexander Sorloth, who scored a hat-trick on the night, ahead of Ademola Lookman.
“I loved how Lookman came on. He should have played. He didn’t start because Sorloth did,” the coach explained.
Ademola Lookman has now made seven goals contributions in as many appearances – four goals and three assists.
