Top scorer in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League Tolu Arokodare is on a high right now, but he also remembers that it has been tough going particularly when he was booed by the fans of his own club.
“I heard the booing roll through the stadium with every bad touch or when I was substituted again,” Arokodare told HUMO.
“To hear something like that from your own supporters: that hurts. How can you perform then?
“Last summer I received messages that left little to the imagination: ‘Go away, we don’t want you in our club!’
“Then you can only react in one way: be a big man. Not easy, you know.”
Arokodare said he hopes it won’t happen again.
“It’s not just football that suffers from a lack of humanity, society too. Although there is a lot of goodness too, of course,” he said.
“When I received racist messages or fainted on the pitch, which happened twice, I was showered with messages of support.
“But it can always be better: we all owe each other love and respect.”
