Football stakeholders in South Africa have reacted with anger after FIFA docked Bafana Bafana three points and three goals for fielding an ineligible player in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Bafana Bafana have now dropped to second place in a World Cup qualifying group that also has the Super Eagles on the back of this FIFA ruling.
“The three points cushion we enjoyed is now lost,” said Velile Mmyandu, SABC journalist.
“We’re disappointed because the team have won all their points on the pitch only for a blunder to rob them of these hard-earned points.”
South Africa sports minister Gayton Mckenzie also expressed disappointment with the decision and has opened full investigations into the “incompetence” that has brought the country into disrepute.
Fans have also called for a clear out of the Danny Jordan-led South Africa Football Association (SAFA), who have admitted “administrative oversight”.
