The Super Falcons tonight got off to a winning start in the delayed 2024 WAFCON after they beat Tunisia 3-0 in their opening Group B match.
The star-studded Nigerians ought to have won this tie by a bigger scoreline against the lowest ranked team of the tournament Tunisia, but they were wasteful in front of goal.
Halimatu Ayinde, Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale and even Player of the Match Esther Okoronkwo all had chances to score for Nigeria, but failed to do so.
Six-time African Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala opened scoring after just four minutes, when she got the final touch to a free kick by Rinsola Babajide.
Babajide turned scorer in first half added time when she conjured a brilliant solo goal.
She celebrated her goal, same way Liverpool star Diogo Jota did before his tragic passing.
VAR cleared the goal after Oshoala appeared to have fouled her marker leading up to this goal.
Substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo made it 3-0 in the 84th minute, when she swept home a loose ball from deep inside the box.
Ashleigh Plumptre must feel a little hard done by when her headed goal in first half additional time was ruled for an infringement.
In the closing moments, Tunisia were unlucky not to pull a goal back when a shot from distance came off the crossbar with holidaying goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie beaten.
Starting XI: Nnadozie – Alozie, Plumptre, Ohale, Demehin – Abiodun (Ucheibe 46), Ayinde (Echegini 90), Payne (Ijamilisu 82) -Babajide (Ihezuo 46), Ajibade (Captain), Oshoala (Okoronkwo 46)
