Premier League giants Manchester United announced McClaren will leave them as an assistant coach and become the new coach of the Reggae Boys of Jamaica.
United wished the former England coach the best of the future.
SCORENigeria has exclusively reported that McClaren, a long-time deputy of Alex Ferguson at United, was one of four coaches shortlisted by the NFF technical committee for consideration for the Super Eagles post by the NFF executive committee.
He won the treble with United in 1999 as an assistant and also guided FC Twente to their first and only Dutch championship.
NFF president Ibrahim Gusau has said a new Super Eagles coach will soon be announced ahead of next month’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
In September, the Super Eagles take on 2026 World Cup qualifying rivals Benin in Uyo, before a trip to Rwanda, who incidentally are also in Nigeria’s World Cup group.
