Herve Renard, who has been shortlisted by the NFF for the Super Eagles top post, has said he is upset by France women’s loss in Ireland ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
A visibly upset Renard admitted his team were not good enough and so fell 3-1 in Ireland in a final 2025 Euros qualifier.
“I will measure my words otherwise I would be too harsh. We did not live up to expectations, that’s all,” he told L’Equipe.
“The positive point is that we finished first in a very difficult group, paradoxically, and that we will therefore be seeded at Euro 2025. For the rest, there was a lack of determination, commitment, technical accuracy. Everything you need in football to live up to expectations.”
He added: “It wasn’t an accident. We just didn’t take the game as we should have. It can happen to anyone, it happened to Spain and Germany last week. We have to be 100% in this women’s football that is progressing.”
However, Renard insisted the defeat is not a cause for concern leading up to the Olympics, where as hosts they are drawn against reigning Olympics champions Canada, Colombia and New Zealand in the first round.
