CHAN Eagles will not feature at next year’s CHAN in Cameroon after they lost 4-3 on aggregate to Togo after they could only manage a 2-0 win in Lagos today.
Last month, Togo won the first leg final playoff 4-1 and so Nigeria needed at least 3-0 to go through to the tournament proper.
Nigeria lost this tie from the first clash in Lome.
Lobi Stars striker Sikiru Alimi put the local Eagles in front in the eighth minute and doubled the home team’s lead with a powerful shot on 71 minutes.
Cheered on by a full house at the Agege Stadium, the CHAN Eagles had several chances to win by a bigger margin but they were not clinical in front of goal.
Goal scorer Alimi fluffed several begging openings, so too the lively Sunusi Ibrahim.
Defender Olisa Ndah also saw his effort chalked off for an infringement.
Enugu Rangers defensive midfielder Anthony Shimanga was outstanding on his international debut.
Togo, on the other hand, parked the bus with as many as nine players always behind the ball in a desperate effort to hold on to their lead from the first leg.
