One of those widely tipped to replace Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has applied for the top post.
The NFF Friday announced the position of the Super Eagles head coach vacant and asked for qualified candidates to apply with a deadline of Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
Experienced journalist Osasu Obayiuwana confirmed on X that Amuneke informed him he has applied to be the next Super Eagles coach.
His application comes amid growing calls for a local man to lead the country’s team away from hiring an expatriate, who in most cases has proved too expensive for the cash-strapped NFF to afford.
The former Tanzania coach has previously assisted Samson Siasia as well as Augustine Equavoen in the national team.
He led Nigeria to win a record fifth U17 World Cup in 2015 in Chile while parading the likes of Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze, who today are established full internationals.
The former Barcelona winger has also worked in Sudan and Egypt as a coach.
Amuneke was named African Player of the Year in 1995, won a historic Olympic football Gold in 1996, the 1994 AFCON as well as major honours with Egyptian giants Zamalek and Sporting Lisbon of Portugal and Barcelona.

Pitso Mosimane is better equipped to handle the super eagles…if he is available, let’s get him immediately and not this amuneke stuff… Amuneke doesn’t have what it takes to handle the super eagles and the expectations…he doesn’t have the tactical skillset, the exposure and personality. He is good but not up to what Nigeria to need as a coach…he will not command respect both from players and the football body. He will not be able to convince players abroad to play for Nigeria because of personality issues… they will not respect or listen to him.
Abeg stop this amuneke stuff…he doesn’t have what we need or want in a coach… you don’t give what you don’t have…
Go for Pitso Mosimane…NFF abeg! Go for Pitso Mosimane….
Emmanyel Amuneke is a very good fit for the Super Eagles job than Pitso Mosimane because he is very good in reading matches, knows the psychology of the Nigerian players and is strategically and tactically very gifted and disciplined as a player and coach.
The players will respect him.because of his pedigree as someone that has played at the highest level.
H
You are correct!!
Please stop this bullshit!! Who are you to tell Nigerians who their coach should be. You are not even a Nigerian. What has this funny Pitso guy done? Cote d’ivoire won afcon with a local coach, so was Senegal and Nigeria in 2013.
If Pitso is qualified let him apply rather than you asking us Nigerians to “stop this Amuneke stuff”. If Pitsi is South African then forget it.
