Super Falcons star Toni Payne has backed the team to go all the way to the Final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after they reached the knockout rounds from a difficult group.
The Falcons finished second behind Group B winners Australia with five points after draws with Canada and Republic of Ireland as well as the shock win over the World Cup co-hosts.
Sevilla winger Payne has caught the eye in heart of the Nigerian midfield at this World Cup and she expressed confidence the Super Falcons can continue their fine run at the tournament.
“If we continue to play as we have and improve on each game, we can go all the way to the Final,” she predicted.
“We are a team of wonderful and hard-working players and together we can achieve our goals.
“We knew we were in the ‘Group of Death’, we knew it was going to be hard, but we also knew it was not going to be impossible to qualify from it.
“The objective was to qualify and we did that today.”
Coach Randy Waldrum said the team could even be disappointed not to beat Republic of Ireland today.
“We could have won this match especially in the second half,” he said.
“But the objective was to get to the knockout stage.”
