Raphael Onyedika has said he will be a better player at Club Brugge after he again caught the eye with a solid performance in midfield for the Belgian champions to record their third straight win in the UEFA Champions League.
Onyedika, who made his Super Eagles debut last week against Algeria, has played all three group games in the Champions League for Club Brugge including Tuesday night’s 2-0 home win over Atletico Madrid.
The 21-year-old defensive midfielder was also wanted in the summer by Serie A champions AC Milan, but opted to join Club Brugge from Danish club FC Midtjylland.
“Club are the best team in Belgium. It is the right step for me, I can improve here,” Onyedika said.
Against Atletico Tuesday night, he made 65 touches, 46 accurate passes, made 5 accurate long balls, won 2 aerial duels 3 tackles and 2 interceptions.
Football has now lifted his family from poverty.
“I am one hundred percent sure I escaped a tough life. Without football, I don’t know how we would have survived,” he admitted.
“I come from a poor family. At times it was a struggle to survive.
“We lived mainly on the streets – ‘the street life’. My daddy died when I was two years old, he was sick. When I was 15 I left the house to go to the Ebedei Academy.”
