The 2022 FIFA World football Cup is on the horizon and fans across the world are earnestly looking forward to the start of the biggest football spectacle on the globe.
In Africa, it is no different and there is a huge weight of expectations placed on the shoulders of the five teams representing the continent.
Some of the biggest countries like Nigeria and Egypt, failed to make the cut and will be conspicuously missing when hostilities start in Qatar.
This means that Nigerians will not have the opportunity of cheering on their Darling team or wagering on the Super Eagles.
However, given the interest the World Cup is likely to elicit in the country, Nigerians are likely to adopt one of the five African teams that will feature at the global showpiece in November.
Additionally, football fans have a chance to put their money where their mouth is with a chance to make some fortune for themselves while enjoying the spectacle.
Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia will be carrying the hopes of many football fans at the Mundial this year.
As the World Cup approaches, bookmakers are beginning to roll out many promotions, including different types of free bets for customers, as well as other forms of freebies for fans to enjoy during the duration of the Mundial.
Let’s take a look at the teams and which one is likely to enjoy the unflinching support of Nigerians.
SENEGAL
Senegal are the reigning African Champions and arguably the most formidable African team at the World Cup.
The West Africans defeated Egypt to lift the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in February before beating the Pharaohs to a World Cup ticket in March.
The Teranga Lions are ably led by former international, Aliou Cisse and can also boast of the talent of Bayern Munich forward, Sadio Mane.
Despite being a West African country just like Nigeria, there is no deep-seated rivalry between the two countries.
Thus, Nigerian fans are likely to back Senegal to go the distance at the World Cup.
GHANA
Nigeria’s eternal rivals, Ghana booked their place at the Mundial at the expense of Nigeria. With fans of the Super Eagles still licking their wounds, it is unlikely that the Black Stars will be getting any love from Nigeria.
The ouster of Nigeria at the hands of Ghana has deepened the rivalry between both countries even more.
It is safe to say that the Ghanaian team should not expect any form of support out of Nigeria.
CAMEROON
To date, Cameroon along with Senegal are the only two African teams to have made it to the Quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup.
Although they pulled the Rabbit out of a hole by beating Algeria to a place in Qatar, their chances of repeating that heroics are very slim.
That may have won a few Nigerian hearts, earning them a few supporters from Nigeria.
MOROCCO
The Atlas Lions are experienced campaigners at this level, but their resolve will be tested early on in a very tough group.
The Moroccans got past DR Congo in a convincing fashion to progress to the Mundial, but the big test will come from the likes of Belgium and Croatia in Group F of the World Cup.
In terms of support, Morocco could get a small section of the country to support them because of Chelsea fans who could be rooting for Hakim Ziyech.
TUNISIA
The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia are another side with World Cup experience.
On paper, however, they are the weakest African team at the World Cup.
The Tunisian team is mostly made up of players who are unknown to Nigerian fans.
Hence, there may not be too many things to cheer about the Tunisians.
