Cyriel Dessers will now most likely return to Belgian club Genk after he failed to agree on a new salary with Dutch club Feyenoord.
Feyenoord said they cannot match the salary Dessers is now asking for.
This will now mean he will return to Genk, but he could still move should he not be guaranteed a first-team place at his hometown club.
Paul Onuachu remains Genk first-choice striker, while Canada international Ike Ugbo will also return from loan at French club Troyes.
Last season, Dessers was close to a loan switch to Spanish Segunda Division side CD Leganes before he eventually headed to Feyenoord.
His exploits with the Dutch club in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League, where he finished as top scorer with 10 goals, will be expected to attract bigger suitors for him now.
