Gernot Rohr has said he has been “verbally” sacked as Super Eagles coach.
This followed a full day of speculations and denials over the future of the Franco-German coach.
A big backer of the coach, Philo Famous, reported on Twitter he has spoken with Rohr, who admitted he has been relieved of his top post.
“I just spoke to Gernot Rohr as per being relieved of his position and he said “verbally yes”…
“I ended our conversation “Thank you for all you have done for our football.”
By this development, the coach is now entitled to a hefty payoff of $2 Million except his employers were able to convince to take a year’s salary in compensation.
Rohr led the Super Eagles to a lacklustre 1-1 draw at home with Cape Verde Tuesday to secure their place in the final playoffs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
He has been widely criticized for his failure to make the most of the huge individual talents of the country’s many Europe-based professionals.
His team selection and tactics have also come under close scrutiny, while he has been knocked for not giving players in the local league a decent run in his team.
Rohr, 68, was appointed Nigeria coach August 2016.
A former Germany international defender, who headed Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso, has led the Super Eagles in 54 international matches over the course of five years and three months, winning 28 of those matches.
His contract is till December 2022, when the World Cup will end.
