Turkish giants Galatasaray will again be the refuge for Onyekuru after he was again deemed surplus to requirements at French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco.
In his third stint at ‘Gala’, he scored five goals in 14 appearances in the Super Lig as the Istanbul giants were pipped to the championship by city rivals Besiktas on mere goals difference after both teams were tied on 84 points apiece.
His personal form earned him a recall to the Super Eagles this year after he was overlooked for most of last year as he tried to sort out his club career.
He was decent against both Benin and Lesotho on 2020 AFCON qualifiers, but he will face fierce competition from the likes of Peter Olayinka and Chidera Ejuke for a place on the Eagles squad.
The first half of the season for the 24-year-old Onyekuru at Monaco was most forgettable as he managed only four appearances, two as a substitute, in Ligue 1.
He still has at least three years left on his contract with the team from The Principality, but it is most likely that his future will be elsewhere.
He has reportedly said he will be happy to stay permanently at ‘Gala’ as Turkey has become his second home, but it is left to be seen if they have the 4.3 Million Euros to take up the buy-out option.
He has also attracted interest from perennial Greek champions Olympiacos, who will again feature in the UEFA Champions League in the coming season.
He is a new entry to the SCORENigeria Top 30.
