The Super Eagles take on Gabon today in a 2026 World Cup Playoffs clash in Rabat, Morocco, it will be a face-off between two of Africa’s leading marksmen – Victor Osimhen vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“They are two players who score a lot of goals and I have worked with both players,” remarked former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
Aubameyang scored seven goals in the World Cup qualifiers, a goal more than what Osimhen delivered for the Super Eagles in the series.
Four of this tally by ‘Auba’ were scored in a thrilling 4-3 win over hosts Gambia last month, while fellow Gabon star Denis Bouanga netted nine goals in the qualifiers.
He has also been on fire at French Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille, where he was named Player of the Month of October.
At ripe old age of 36, Aubameyang is the talisman of the Panthers of Gabon since his debut in 2009.
He is available for selection after his red card in the final day qualifier against Burundi.
He was the CAF Player of the Year in 2015, while Osimhen won the continental accolade two years ago.
‘Auba’ has netted 33 goals and made 10 assists in 77 appearances for his country, while Osimhen has got 23 goals and recorded 10 assists in 38 full international appearances.
The Gabon star has scored 375 club career goals, while Osimhen, 10 years younger, has got 160 goals for his various clubs.
It will therefore be a shootout between a proven marksman in the evening of his career and a younger gun who has continued to fire his way to the top.
