WAFCON debutants Malawi tonight recorded a famous victory after they beat defending champions Super Falcons 3-2 in an opening Group C match in Rabat, Morocco.
It was a Sisters’ Act as Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga scored the three goals for Malawi with the Nigerian fightback helped by goals from skipper Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Uchenna Kanu.
After a scoreless first half during which Nigeria enjoyed the better possession, Temwa made history by scoring Malawi’s first-ever goal at the WAFCON in the 69th minute.
Her more famous sister Tabitha, who plays for top French club Lyon, then doubled their lead five minutes later.
The Super Falcons pulled a goal back in additional time through an Ajibade penalty after a Malawi defender handled the ball inside her box, before Temwa made it 3-1 for Malawi with a superb chip past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to complete her brace.
Kanu brought the scores to 3-2 eight minutes into additional time, but it was too little too late to complete a Nigerian comeback.
Malawi were uncompromising in defense and very dangerous in transition as the Super Falcons found it increasingly difficult to unkock the rearguard of the opposition.
On Saturday, the Super Falcons will tackle Zambia, who smashed past Egypt 6-0 with Barbra Banda grabbing a hat-trick in the opening Group C match earlier today.
