The gutsy win in Rabat, Morocco, lifted them to second place in Group C with three points from two matches, ahead of the Zambians on the head-to-head rule.
They will now need another win in their final group game against whipping team Egypt Wednesday night to ensure passage to the knockout rounds of the tournament, which also serves as qualifying series for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Veteran forward Asisat Oshoala proved to be the match winner after she put Nigeria ahead in the eighth minute, when she outran the defense of the Cooper Queens to get to the end of a long ball by skipper Rasheedat Ajibade. Her first shot came off the diving goalkeeper before it rebounded off her body and into the net.
Just before halftime, the Falcons were reduced to 10 players when defender Tosin Demehin was sent off for a professional foul on the dangerous Barbra Banda.
As expected, Zambia chased the game after the interval, but Nigeria managed to hold out to finally get their campaign back on track.
