Gernot Rohr, who will lead Benin in today’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles in Abidjan, has picked his former team to qualify for the Mundial despite poor start in the qualifying series.
Against most expectations, the Super Eagles are second from bottom in Group C with three points from as many matches and are under pressure to beat third-placed Benin to climb up the standings.
“The Super Eagles are still my favourites to qualify for the World Cup,” said Rohr at the press conference leading up to today’s game.
“Nigeria are a great team. We are outsiders, but we will play to win.
“This match is an opportunity to meet with players and other staff of the team after a long time, it is always good thing.
“There are no regrets.”
Rohr was Super Eagles coach for six years during which time he qualified the team to the 2018 World Cup in Russia as well as the 2019 and 2021 AFCONs.
