Liberia coach Peter Butler has backed his team to upset “favourites” Super Eagles in a 2022 World Cup qualifier slated for Friday in Lagos even if his team have not done so in a decade.
English coach Butler has called up 22 players made up of 15 overseas-based stars and seven from the local league.
He said a qualifying group that also has Nigeria, Cape Verde and Central African Republic is tough with the Super Eagles favourites to advance from that section to the playoffs.
“It’s going to be a tough group and favourites Nigeria have got qualities and are heavily funded compared to us,” said Butler.
“But I am going to back myself against any coach in this group.
“They have Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, I could name more, but we’re going to be competitive and I believe we’re going to upset a few teams on the road.”
Foreign-based stars like Sam Johnson and Seth Herberg will miss the trip to Lagos no thanks to injury.
