The Golden Eaglets hopes of international glory next year have been totally dashed after world football governing body FIFA announced today they have cancelled next year’s World Cup.
That invariably means next month’s U17 AFCON in Benin Republic will also suffer a similar fate.
The Eaglets, who have been preparing for the U17 AFCON qualifiers in Abuja for weeks now under coach Fatai Amoo, will therefore have to head home.
It was what their female counterparts, the Flamingoes, also suffered recently.
FIFA cited the Coronavirus Pandemic for the cancellation of the U17 World Cup for both men and women as well as their U20 equivalent.
“The Covid-19 Pandemic continues to present challenges for the hosting of international sporting events and to have a restrictive effect on international travel,” FIFA said.
“It became clear that the global situation has failed to normalize to a sufficient level to address the challenges associated with hosting both tournaments, including the feasibility of the relevant qualification pathways.”
Both the U17 and U20 World Cups will now be staged in 2023.
Hi
Good Day The year is coming to an end, and the festive season is just around the corner. As you celebrate, I hope you spend every moment with a heart filled with gratitude and a fulfilled soul because it’s a privilege to be alive. Compliments of the season, dear.
