Several top officials have told SCORENigeria that the Federal Government has considered a Presidential Task Force for Nigeria football a few months ago because the NFF lacked direction and results were few and far between.
“Yes, the idea of a Presidential Task Force was on about six or so months ago,” a top official disclosed.
Another official said more pressing matters of state pushed aside a special task force for the country.
“Government is far from impressed with how the NFF have been running the sport in the country and some drastic measures including setting up of a task force was considered,” he said.
“It’s most certainly a vote of no confidence on the NFF leadership.
“And with how the football federation have handled the appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles, a task force that will derive its powers from the Presidency is clearly justified now.”
The NFF have bungled the preparations of the various national teams, notably the Golden Eaglets, while the U23s failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics and the Eaglets could only finish a disappointing third in the sub-regional U17 AFCON qualifiers in Ghana recently.
SCORENigeria today published an editorial urging the FGN to set up a Presidential Task Force because the NFF have failed in the discharge of their responsibilities.
We stressed that this task force should take over the Super Eagles qualification campaign for both the 2025 AFCON as well as the 2026 World Cup.
It was a Presidential Task Force that delivered Nigeria’s qualification to the historic 2010 World Cup when hopes were fading.
The country is now in danger of missing out on a second straight World Cup as the Super Eagles are second from bottom in their qualifying group after four rounds of matches.
The football-mad country is also without a coach less than a month to their opening 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin in Uyo.
