Amid the uproar over Victor Boniface not starting for the Super Eagles against South Africa, a top source has told SCORENigeria that the Bayer Leverkusen star was “not in great physical condition” when he entered camp.
Finidi George listed Paul Onuachu to lead the Super Eagles attack against Bafana Bafana and this caused fans to knock down the coach for not going with Victor Boniface.
“The truth of the matter is that (Victor) Boniface was not fully fit when he came to camp, he was too heavy, overweight,” an inside source told only SCORENigeria
“That was the main reason the coach opted for Onuachu.
“That was why the coach asked journalists to allow he and assistants to do their job.
“All the players are right under their noses and they have the relevant information on all the players they called up including their fitness levels.
“The fans don’t have such information.”
It would be recalled that since Victor Boniface returned from an abductor injury that sidelined him for four months, he only started three of seven Bundesliga games he appeared for Bayer Leverkusen.
He also did not play a full game, while he was an unused sub for both legs of the Europa League semifinal against AS Roma and was only brought on at the start of the second half against Atalanta in the final.
In addition, he was an unused sub in the German Cup final against Kaiserslautern, which was his team’s last game of the season on May 25.
The player’s recent fringe role got a Nigerian journalist to ask his coach Xabi Alonso at an official press conference why this has been so and the Spanish coach simply assured him the club are happy with the player.
I blame Finidi for all the backlashes cos he didn’t open up, do you blame the fans, I thought he said he knows Nigerians.
