Top Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport has revealed that in 2019 Napoli top transfer target at centre-forward was Erling Haaland, not Victor Osimhen.
But when that did not go through, sports director Cristiano Giuntoli told club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis they should go for Victor Osimhen even though about that same time too they had extended the contract of Belgium star Dries Mertens, who is Napoli all-time highest scorer.
Giuntoli told his boss: “Let’s try with Osimhen.”
And despite the uncertainties caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic, Napoli dared and broke the bank to make Osimhen their record signing on 70 Million Euros, which could rise to 83 Million Euros with various add-ons.
Like they say, the rest is now history…
