It has now been revealed that players demanded for improved bonuses and allowances leading to the early elimination of NPFL champions Akwa United from the CAF Champions League.
Akwa United were recently sent packing from the Champions League by Algerian champions CR Belouizdad 2-1 on aggregate after they won the home leg 1-0 in Uyo.
An insider at the club has now revealed that the players virtually held the Akwa Ibom State Government to ransom on the eve of the decisive return leg in Algeria.
The players demanded for a match bonus of $1,000-a-man and $100 daily allowance to honour this match.
They agreed to train in Algeria an hour later than scheduled only after several top government officials pleaded with them.
