South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi will be handed another chance by coach Gernot Rohr to start against Benin in today’s 2021 AFCON qualifier against Benin in Uyo.
The Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper was No 1 at the recent AFCON in Egypt, but was openly blamed by Rohr for letting in the goal that lifted Algeria past Nigeria to the tournament final.
Rohr has now dropped the strongest hint Akpeyi will be in goal today based on his top-class displays for his top South African club.
The Eagles coach, who lamented that the country have been unlucky in the goalkeeping department, said he will be unkind to start Germany-based Maduka Okoye on only his second visit to Nigeria even though he did well when he came on for the injured Francis Uzoho last month against Brazil.
Rohr said the third goalkeeper on the squad, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, has not played enough games as the new NPFL season has only just began.
