Former Nigeria World Cup star Victor Ikpeba has maintained that the Super Eagles did the right thing by boycotting a recent 2025 AFCON qualifier after the team were held hostage at a Libyan airport just as CAF are set to deliver their verdict on the botched game.
Last week, the Super Eagles could not play an AFCON qualifier in Benina, Libya, after they were held for 20 hours by Libyan authorities.
Some have criticised the decision to boycott the match.
However, Ikpeba said it was the best decision to take as it concerned the safety of players and officials in Libya.
“Shame to those who think we should have gone ahead and played this match despite the circumstances because the lives of our players do matter,” he maintained.
“No three points are worth our lives.”
This week, CAF will announce their verdict after they mandated the Disciplinary Board to investigate the incident.
Experts and officials have differed on what the likely outcome will be.
Former FIFA executive member Amos Adamu said he expects Libya to forfeit the game and be fined for breaching fair play regulations.
Some others have suggested that the match be replayed at a neutral venue, while Libya will be sanctioned heavily to serve as a deterrent.
