Mutiu Adepoju featured at three World Cups and the former Super Eagles skipper has told SCORENigeria he believes coach Gernot Rohr is on track for Russia 2018 after he released a 30-man provisional squad.
The full Interview:
SCORENIGERIA: This week Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr released his 30 man Provisional list ahead of the World Cup, what do you make of that list?
MIUTIU ADEPOJU: Well, I think is a very good one. It has almost all the players expected, I think the coach is trying to do the right thing at the right time and I must say he picked the best players.
We have some new call-ups like Simeon Nwankwo, a striker from FC Crotone in Italy, and of course NPFL leading goal scorer Junior Lokosa. Do you think these players are good enough to make it to the World Cup?
I think they are from different leagues and they have been scoring goals, so I think is good for the coach to give them a chance. If they find them useful, why not?
Nevertheless, we also have players who have been there before and overall the list is a good one.
You also have coaching badges from Spain and were you to be in charge of the team, who of the four goalkeepers on the squad would you drop?
I won’t be able to say because I will need to depend on their performance during the season and at the World Cup season.
The goalkeeping position is a very delicate one, I won’t be able to say who to be dropped, but what I know is that (Francis) Uzoho has proved himself, (Ikechukwu) Ezenwa, Dele Ajiboye and (Daniel)Akpeyi have been playing well at their clubs. We should all support any of the three to be picked eventually.
How far do you think Nigeria can go at the World Cup with the players now listed?
Getting the best players available for the tournament does not guarantee that you are going to do well, it depends on the opponents too.
I would rather want us to go step by step instead of saying we are going to get the quarter-final or semi- final or whatever because now football is not one plus one.
I would prefer we play the first game and take other game as they come because Croatia are not push-overs and that match is very important, the three points are very important in the first game.
So, let us cross that hurdle first before we start thinking of the next step to take.
