Daniel Akpeyi

South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has got the backing of coach Gernot Rohr to make the final cut for the World Cup in Russia despite criticisms by the media and fans.

But the chances of Vincent Enyeama playing at Russia 2018 have suffered greatly, the Eagles coach has now admitted.

He (Akpeyi) has good chances to be one of our three goalkeepers for the World Cup,” Rohr said in an interview today

“Akpeyi was a bit unfortunate in our only defeat against South Africa.

“But he is working hard, he is fighting and he has a chance to be part of our World Cup squad.”

Rohr has tried to get Enyeama to come out of a self-imposed international exile, but it appears he has given up on the Lille shot stopper because he has yet to be playing for His French Ligue 1 club after he recovered from a long-term knee injury.

“He has problems in Lille at his club. He is currently not playing and is only the number three at his side,” Rohr admitted.

“He wanted to switch clubs but he didn’t find a new team.

“As a consequence, the question about Enyeama returning is not really up for debate.”
